The Great Valley Music Parents Association (GVMPA) supports approximately 800 music students and their teachers at Great Valley High School and Great Valley Middle School in Malvern, PA.As the music department?s only extracurricular activity, the marching band does receive a great deal of support from the GVMPA, much like the school?s athletic booster clubs.However, the GVMPA is much more.
The GVMPA's primary function is to provide funds for musical instruments and other equipment to the high school music department, fulfilling needs that fall outside the department's regular budget. Additionally, the GVMPA annually awards college scholarships to selected seniors, purchases and maintains all of the formal wear used by the school's Honors Ensembles, organizes student fund raisers, and provides a large contingent of parent volunteers for a variety of music department activities.
The GVMPA's main organizational fundraiser is the operation of the concession stand at all GVHS home football games. For many years, GVMPA has equiped and maintained the Valley Stadium concession stand. In 2007, the organization led the renovation of the concession stand and contributed almost 40% of the cost of that improvement as an investment in continuing our ability to raise funds for the music programs at Great Valley and for the benefit of all the group who utilize the stand.Each fall, dozens of music parents contribute their time to make this fund raising effort successful and have fun doing so!
Over the last five years, the GVMPA has contributed a large variety of equipment to the music programs, including:
* marching equipment for the Middle School
* two tenor saxaphones
* two french horns
* a variety of percussion equipment for both the concert and marching bands
* two mellophones
* a major contribution towards the purchase of three new pianos
* additional marching band uniforms and color guard equipment
* the marching band's golf cart and equipment trailer
Each year, the GVMPA repairs and replace portions of the formal wear used by the Honors Strings, Chamber Singers and Honors Wind Ensemble.GVMPA members coordinate the fitting and distribution of formal wear.
Each year, the GVMPA awards college scholarships to graduating seniors who have participated in the music programs at Great Valley. Scholarship winners are not required to major in music during their college career. In recent years, we have been able to increase the amount of these scholarships.
The GVMPA provides a number of student fund raisers each school year.These opportunities allow individual students from any music organization to raise funds that are used to offset their cost of music department trips. During the fall of 2007, students from every music group raised funds to pay for their 2008 trip to Disney World.Several students paid for more than half of their trip through these fund raisers.
